The Setting
Tooreen is a small village in County Mayo bordering counties Roscommon, Galway and Sligo. The Ave Maria Nursing Home is ideally situated in the heart of Tooreen just yards away from St Mary’s Church. Most noted for its famous hurling club founded in 1957 which won their first County Senior Title in 1966. Not to mention the infamous Tooreen Ballroom of Romance founded by the late Monsignor James Horan.
Tooreen is accessible by air, road and train. Knock International airport is just fifteen minutes’ drive while Ballyhaunis train station. Kilkelly, Charlestown, Swinford and Ballaghaderreen are just minutes away.
Gardening at Ave Maria
At the rear of the nursing home there is an enclosed garden with a poly tunnel. This is used to its full potential by the residents where they enjoy many therapeutic hours of gardening. They provide the kitchen with beautiful fresh herbs, onions, cabbage, lettuce, rhubarb and strawberries.
The residents love to listen to the humming of the laying hens while they collect their free-range eggs for breakfast. The residents spend many tranquil hours relaxing outdoors with views of green pastures and cattle grazing, often catching a glimpse of a rabbit, hare and sometimes a fox.
Oratory
Since the beginning of time, people have withdrawn to find a quiet place to reflect, heal and tend to the soul. In the oratory at The Ave Maria Nursing Home, the Blessed Sacrament is reserved. There you will find peace, healing and comfort, where the only noise will be the whisper of God’s presence mingled with nature’s sounds of cattle mooing and the melody from birds’ songs. This is surely is a prayerful place for anybody of any religion or belief.
Menus / Dietary Requirements
All menus are tailor-made to suit your needs. The fully equipped kitchen located beside the spacious dining room has a talented and experiences culinary team. Residents can enjoy everything from homemade bread to healthy balanced meals directed by the medical experts.
